BT Total Broadband Reviews

BT Total

bt total (****) broadband

avoid bt like the plague, been with them for 14 months, paid £24 a month for 8 meg but was lucky to get 1.5 dispite me living within spitting distance of the exchange. call centers ok if you want a laugh. but i have given them 6 for reliability due to the fact that you can rely on it being pathetically bad. initially i was told i would get a bt hub and phone for the top package, still waiting for the phone, glad it never turned up as it probably wouldn't have worked. when trying to transfer over they got funny, had to phone at least 4 times trying to get my migration code then wanted to charge me £45 cancelation fee. muppets. with o2 now and they are excellent, only paying £2.50 a month for 16meg unlimitted as they gave me a deal when i upgraded my phone.

absolute disaster

The 1 rating does not begon to describe how bad my experience was with BT. Their salesperson lied to me about delivery policy (they don't deliver to a work address), and then BT never contacted me about an alternative delivery. After several phone calls (each one involves listening to "were are very busy. you are currently in a queue. We are sorry for the delay" over and over) I thought we had cancelled the order. Then I received a £300 bill for cancellation, even though I had been calling them and e-mailing them and filling in complaints. A few more calls later and two months after the initial order, I am finally back to where I started. Terrible does not even begin to describe their "service". Oh I ordered on-line from O2 and everything was running perfectly within 4 days.

customer service? no chance!

  buggy
the worst customer services i have ever dealt with. was forced to join BT broadband because i recently moved and they were the only real ISP in the area. not bad speed but you pay for that. if you ever need to get hold of them be prepared to be glued to your phone for days on end on hold. when you do get through no-one is ever able to help and put you into a long queue for someone else. have used virgin and O2 before i moved and a much better service!

had enough

Ive used BT since broadband came out and always thought i was with the best, i had a flirt with talk talk, which last 3 weeks before i went back to BT. Ive always paid the top price for what i thought was the best speed where i live, at the moment thats £30 a month for a 8gb, but really get around 1.5mb to 4mb depending on time of day, as bt are probally the most expensive around you would expect quality support, but that is not the case. Ive now finally decided to move again as the support india is just terrible scripted rubbish, being a pc technican i know how to set up my own pc and router as i do it all day every day, but the final straw came when talking to india i started talking about tracert and pings, the guy gave me a phone number to call and chat with a technican, the phone number turned out to be the dial up help. Absolute rubbish and im now moving a.s.a.p As said in a review on this page - nothing but CLOWNS

Disaster!

I really wish I had never signed up for Broadband Anywhere - more like Braodband Nowhere! They cut off my Bradband phone becuase it was high usage and they hadn't set up Direct Debit so it wasn't paid (I gave them the details) - it has taken 2 months to get reconnected. The mobile phone was off for a week while they ported my number and hasn't worked fro a month recently due to problems with changin ported number. They sent me the wrong BT Phone Hub, didn't send me a mobile - the list goes on. I signed up in May and call them onaverage 3 times a week - it drives me nuts! Don't impose the stress on yourself. That said - when it occasionally works the service is quite good.

Shocking technical support

  Nigel
Lost my BT broadband for 11 days. I identified the likely cause on day 1 (i work in the 3rd line IT support dept for a bank) but the Indian girl i spoke to didn't know what i was talking about. Being asked to 'switch it off and on again' is pretty frustrating if you already know the problem lies at the server or exchange end of the process. An engineer visited my home and failed to identify the fault so they opted to blame my hardware or me. I threatened to leave and they tried to sell me a new contract but they sent me a new router (as my hardware was broken). The new router didn't help (hey i guess it wasn't my hardware after you) so another engineer called and he found the fault and fixed it. Am looking for a new ISP, hence why i'm on this site.

very poor

  alan
I paid for up to 8 mbps and have never had more than 800kbps. The help I have received is is non existent. I am less than 2 miles from the telephone exchange

Very unhappy!

  jamesy
Can't get any other ISP in this area. No other telecoms company has installed their equipment in the exchange. Have recently received an upgrade to 2Meg, but they haven't enabled it yet in the exchange. Been waiting 3 months. The customer service is terrible. The price is too high compared to other providers and they have the monopoly round here. A very poor service.

Pathetic

  Derek
Pay for upto 8MB get between 1 - 5. usually at the lower end. Speed varies all the time. BT Customer support mindblowingly frustrating.Live within sight of the exchange! Keep well away from these clowns!

Disgraceful - BT

  Patra
Joined 19th Feb 2008. First month hardly connected at all. Average speed 128kbps i.e. a pre-broadband speed and on average I am still disconnected twice a day. My Member of Parliament is trying to help. BT still trying to deny that there is a cable fault in spite of overwhelming evidence to contrary. Local pressure group got 790meters of cable replaced but noone with BT has had any improvement in speed or reliability. Some people with other service providers have had good improvements AVOID BT AT ALL COSTS

Poor on all counts

  Steve
Unreliable, slow (153Kbs!) and unhelpful staff. Indian staff have v poor English. UK staff just don't care. I've had the service for about one month and I'm canceling at the end of this month.

Better now

  Chrisjb
After having download issues..less than 1MB, I went thru the tortuous process of India call centre, followed by ALL sorts of advice...finally ending up with a 'Lift and Shift' at the Server end. A ;ast desperate effort it seems to BT, or Openreach, or whoever! But it worked, am now getting between 5-6 MB. But what a process!

I have a terrible down load speed about 160Kbps sometimes rising to about 320 Kbps. Bt say they can do nothing to improve it. Long phone calls to India have not helped at all.

Bt Total Broadband

  snoopylou
As others paid for up to 8Mb and only get 1.47mb

Poor

  Rod
Like many others, paid for top package (claimed up to 8Mbps speed) but numerous speed tests confirm that my average upload is 0.31 Mbps and download is strangely SLOWER at 0.128 Mbps!! NOT HAPPY

Good Speed / Reliability

  Pip
I have no complaints about the speed and reliability as I get Download 6.41Mbps / Upload 360 Kbps. Its just the Broadband Customer Service Dept in India which lets BT down. Have stopped my Hub from updating at f/w level 6.2.2.6, and it doesn't lock up at all now.

Poor

  Susan Graham
Paid for up to 8Mbps but only get 0.424Mbps Download speed and only 0.217Mbps upload. (Can anyone beat these speeds?) I am still waiting for a BT engineer to resolve this.

Its Pants

  chris n
I have numerous dropouts of service over the last few months they said try this and that paying £24 a months for up to 8 mb but lucky if I get 2.7 mb once did speed test and got 3.9 mb but that didnt last long Im waiting for a bt engineer to come and check out the line but they usualy blame my pc or my phone xtention now got hub in the socket next to phone and ethernet but still only getting 2.7mb Im thinking about changing isp but it will still be same phone line im about half mile from exchange

very slow

  alan
.23mb download .32mb upload. Hub keeps cutting out basically crap

Bad Firmware Upgrade Procedure

  David Johnston
Sfter some initial teething problems generally good speed and good network reliiability but I have now suffered two complete HomeHub failures due to BT's insistence on upgrading the firmware without telling me. If you happen to switch off during the upgrade the Homehub dies! What a crazy way to run a system; and how arrogant of BT to insist it wil upgrade my router when it see fit! It's time BT recognised that customers ought to be warned before an upgrade takes place and be given the chance to defer it to a (for them) non-critical time.

good for me

  chris r
bt opt 3 is a good service if you live near to the exchange, over 3 miles is pushing your luck if you want good download speeds,5to6 mbps, but upload is very poor at 29kbps, so chque out locations befor you sign up guys!!!

my internet

  max
i stay just 5 min from the main bt exchange and can onley get half a meg how do they work that one out

Under 1mb

  Billy
Been with them since March 07, had 4 visits with no faults always at the exchange, i'm only 2 miles away, its the biggest regret that i have ever made going back to BT, DON'T DO IT

BT

  -Spartan-
the internet is unstable (up to 6mb where i live) but i never normaly get overe 515KB the games i play i all way's lag out due to the internet some games do not let me connect

Very Poor

  Bob Lister
Every time you phone up technical support, they treat you like an idiot. They tell you to do the obvious things you have already tried. They say there is no supervisor on, they are lying. Currently to prove to them that my iffy connection, drops out several times a day, is their problem not mine, i have disconnected every phone, connected to the incoming socket(with taking screws out and plugging into the inside socket).Connection speed averages 2MB, i am paying £26.99 just for broadband, expecting 5MB, which they say is the speed to my house-rubbish!!

Too Slow

  Bill
Up to 8 Meg, I never got more than 2.5 Meg in fact it was usually slower. I have now moved to Virgin, speed has definitely increased and connection seems more reliable plus it works out cheaper. Time will tell.

OK

  Damo
Good speed, no issues with the service, but then again I do live within 1 mile of my exchange - but I guess who ever provides the service over that cooper line would get the same speeds to the exchange - back end is the only bit you can pick with different ISP's unless you get cable, I have no issues and happy with the choice of BT.

Too expensive

  Ian
I get 1.3Mbps download so it pisses me off to have to pay the same price as someone who gets 8 meg. £24 a month is a lot of money for such a slow connection. Everything else is usually ok, however the homehub sometimes loses connection or goes slower than dial up. I wish they would make ALL of their customer service areas UK based only though. And the Digital Vault is just so damn slow...

Upto Speed charges

  mike powell
What a cheek these companies like BT have charging everyone the same whether the advertised speed is available or not--even with the pathetic "upto" speed clause. Its about time the regulator jumped on these companies and showed some concern for the public at large--come on do the job you are getting paid for.

I have just changed to BT from Aol who were a complete nightmare, I have been with them for two months now and I must say that it is an excellent service my hub works well all the time my speed is low 2mb but that is due to still having the overhead wires in the part where I live. Customer services have been wonderful the one time I have had to call them. They are about £7.00 a month dearer but I think well worth it, I have also gained another phone with its own number via the hub which is wonderful as I have teenagers and the phone is available to me now.

BT Broadband

  Frank
Been with BT for about a year.No problems at all so far. I like the home page layout which you can change to suit your own tastes. I have found the BT Home adviser really good, information of all types dealt with in a very friendly way.

Don't Use Bt Ever

  Lionel Harrogate
Poor speeds - paying for 8mb getting 2.7 max - even though BT offer a cheaper 2mb package. I will move as soon as I can set up new provider.

Speed and reliability

  terry
had bt for 2 years. no choice out in the middle of the UK. Speed is 500 if lucky and connection drops out on any excuse. BT always want to blame the PC, the house, anything but BT equipment. Strange that others in this village have exactly the same complaints. The problem is actually that as the village is on the edge of the exchange area we get a poor service, but BT never want to accept that they give the middle of the Uk a poor service.

Decent

  Dave
I have only just switched from BT after having had very few problems over the years I have been with them. The network itself has been very reliable for me. I could only get a download speed of 1.5Mbps, but I suspect this is down to the antiquated local exchange rather than the ISP. Time will tell whether O2 (who I've now moved to) provide a quicker speed. There is a slight problem with the Home Hub, where every now and then (2-3 times a month?) it will lock up and require switching off then on again. Not exactly the end of the world, but a bit of a pain. The tech support is not the worst I have ever experienced, but it is based in India, and the the phone menus ("Press 1 to...") are frustrating to navigate through. I have only given it 3 stars due to the relatively high cost compared to some deals you can get nowadays and the above glitch with the Home Hub. Tech Support is not fantastic, but as I have only had to call them on 2 occasions over - what, 4 years? - then I'll not mark them down too badly on that.

poor bt

  andysue
promised up to 8mb they now say line will only support 1.5mb hub drops out at least twice a day customer service is pants want to change but tied to contract cant wait to be free hope to go wireless

utterly awful

  Luke
I'm absolutly disgusted by the service provided by bt. everyday i have problems connecting to the homehub, i even bought a new wireless adaptor and i still had problems. bt customer services are a joke after being on hold for 30 mins i would be told i need to speak to someone else and go back on hold for half an hour. i will NEVER go with bt ever again and advise anybody who is thinking of switching to avoid bt at all costs.

bt broadband

  ness
Customer service truly awful, does not deserve the 1 star. Home hub keeps cutting out & wireles not working at all. Call centre in India, when I rang them they told me to take the telephone socket apart!! They just will not listen to you, can't wait til contract ends.

BT Total Broadband

  Bobslapstic
Hi everyone, I know i said i would report back in a months time. BUT ! Tonight (put the clocks back night) I just did another Speed test and the excellent news is that i now have 5.92Mbps download speed as at 23.05 Hrs. Upload is still the same at 0.36Mbps but i'm not bothered about that. It looks like the BT system needs a week to sort itself out at the local exchange. But now I am pleased with my switch to BT from Virgin (telewest). I will tell you all in my next post what Virgin offered me to NOT cancel my service with them! You will be quite surprised, i know i was. Bob.

BT Total Broadband

  Bobslapstic
Just joined BT from Virgin (telewest) Speed on Virgin was 3.65Mbps Down Speed on BT is only 1.89Mbps Down Virgin Upload 0.29Mbps BT Upload 0.36Mbps So not impressed by the speed reduction with BT but system seems more relieable, I was getting outages EVERY day with Virgin of anything of up to 3 hours a day. Not good at £25 pounds a month! I will report back again in a months time, of any new developments. Bob.

Good Service

  Peter Mclean
I have had bt total for about a year now and although i know other people have problems with it , i have found the service brilliant only problem i have encountered was a small outage for about 2 hours which was no big deal
