Question Intermittent ADSL Problem - 19-12-07, 07:14 PM

Hi All - I'm way out in the country, but only 0.5 miles from the nearest BT (sub)station, using BT Option 2 Broadband, BT broadband router (voyager 210), BT filters, and an Ethernet connection to pc.
The problem I'm having is that the DSL signal at the router disappears regularly for 1 - 2 minutes at a time (DSl & Internet lights go off), and then returns again, operating normally, for no apparent reason. When it's gone I obviously have no broadband connection, and nothing works. As soon as it's back, everything returns to normal. The only other equipment connected to the house phone line is a BT cordless phone, on a different socket, with it's own BT filter.
Anyone have any ideas where the problem might be ?? it's not a major issue, but it does become very annoying when it drops out multiple times a day, and I'm working (online) from home....
Thanks in advance for any ideas,
Alan

ps. love the free speed check - I'm getting ca. 5 - 5.5 Mbps / 0.35 Mbps (on a good day, and when it works)...somewhat lower than the BT "up to 8 Mbps" sales pitch.

Default Intermittent ADSL problem - 01-01-08, 11:56 AM

Hi Alan,

I also have a BT Voyager 210 and have started having the same problem. It seems many other people are too, see the thread on this topic at The Scream. my bt voyager 210 adsl router keeps on disconnecting - The Scream!

I'm currently trying to persuade my BB provider (Madasafish) to let me have a new modem, but it's out of warranty. It may be possible if I sign up for a new 12month contract apparently.

Hope this helps,

Sue

Sorry the link didn't work in my previous post, but the title of the thread at 'The Scream' is "my bt voyager 210 adsl router keeps on disconnecting".

Thumbs down virgin are breaching contracts again? - 03-01-08, 12:25 AM

Im very concerned about the poor performance of my internet connection that im recieving. (The so called upto 8meg and unlimited downloads with free landline calls for £20 per month.) Ever since ive started my service with virgin for my non-cable broadband 2 months ago, ive had nothing but slow performance speeds. It can take 10 mins just to load one web page if im lucky, if not at all. All of my neighbours have good speeds except myself! Ive spend alot of time on the phone trying to solve the issue with virgin at my expense, and have also sent emails in which ive recieved no reply even after 4 weeks after i sent it. Ive tested all my line connections etc as advised and also have a new router from virgin which does not seem to slove the problem. Ive been throbbed off by the so called technical helpline on numerous occasions after they gave me excuses after excuses as to why it is apparently my fault that i have slow download speeds. And also they seem to give me different excuses each time i ring for assistance. THIS IS a breach of contract, and im sure trading standards will like to know more, and im still not too happy with the service im receiving. Ive had BT test the lines etc even though i can only recieve upto 1meg anyway! This seems to be a breech if contract and it does not comly with the sales of goods act 1973. THis is not what i paid for and im movong to another provider. I can only download at 3/kb/s on average with everything set correctly. And in the evenings the net hardly works at all! This is worse than dial up, and im obviously not a happy customer. Does anyone know what i can do about this? Surely as a faithful customer i must have some democratic consumers rights like everyone else! This also seems to be a money making scam by Virgin.

Hi Alan, I think I can help with this one!...I had the same problem with my BT Home Broadband which lasted for 6 months..I had the same mystery cutouts and loss of service as you're having except that mine lasted for hours and even days on occasions. After nearly 40 hours of chating to Indian call centres and resolving nothing, I was lucky enough to have an engineer call who actually KNEW what it could be, and he was right!...The speed of the connection, ie in your case 5 to 5.5 Mbps is simply too fast!..YES!..it's too fast for the equiptment to work without tripping at the exchange (although this isn't always shown at the exchange!)....In my case, the engineer requested that the line speed be reset at the exchange (to a slower 3Mbps in my case) and hey presto!...never failed again.

It's worth a call to BT to ask them Alan...Hope it works out for you

Mike

Hi Mike - thanks - that sounds like it may actually help. The BT line test says I can handle up to 8 Mbps, but the "up to" part of that statement may indeed be the issue - I'll have (another) word with BT.

I too have had numerous calls with BT call centres, and the best they can do is offer me a discounted monthly price - IF I sign a new contract. Needless to say - until the issue is resolved, I do not want a new 12 or 18 month contract. If someone else else comes with a better offer, I prefer to be free to take it.

Thanks again for your suggestion, and good luck to everyone.
Alan

Default Still think the router is the problem - 07-01-08, 10:30 PM

I've changed my router to a D-Link one supplied by my isp and it's working fine, no irritating disconnections now I've stopped using the Voyager 210. It was doing it as frequently as every 15mins just before I switched, but I've been on for 3 days now with no problem.

to the person with the virgin non cable broadband, ive had exactly the same problem .. my line will only accept a 1 meg and i was getting the up to 8 meg package from virgin, after numourous phone calls to their tech support and been told i had to start taking my BT socket apart and moving my pc around the house, i finally got talking to one of their tech guys who knew what he was talking about. he told us the problem within 5 minutes, apparantly our line had what they call noise on it which ment as soon as anyone within a certain distance of me used there internet i would go to the bottom of the queue for speed, leaving me with a speed worse than dial up... the only fix was to phone customer services at virgin and request a 1 meg fixed line with the anytime calls, same price 19.99 but at least now i have a speed i can use fine no matter what time of day it was .. hope this is of some help to you
