Default Use of USB Broadband Dongle with Ubuntu Linux "Hardy Heron" installed - 27-07-08, 08:51 PM

My son is interested in purchasing a "Pay As You Go" USB dongle for use on his Dell Desktop, which is loaded with a Ubuntu Linux operating system, as quoted above.

However, when he enquired of T Mobile, he was advised that their dongle would not work with Linux and Orange stated that they didn't know whether their dongle would work on Linux, or not, but they wouldn't be in any responsible if it didn't!!! "3" indicates limited coverage in this area only, so he didn't enquire of them.

Has anyone any experience of using a USB dongle with Linux, please, and which company(s), if any?

Hi Deskpilot,

My husband has exactly the same problems. He has even now been mis-sold dongles because the call centres did not understand what Linux is and the technical departments are just as contradictory. If you have managed to resolve this, please help as hubby is now on the point of dumping Linux and loading Windows.

Help!
