Default O2 wireless router swapping - 28-07-08, 12:34 PM

Hi,
Does anyone know, what are the possibilities to swap the original O2 provided router for other router?I am sure there shouldn't be any technical issues if I change the router (for a fully featured one), but I am not sure how the O2 router is hooked up with the broadband service - that is, does O2 provide the necessary settings details, or is it a way of plug in and use it(like BT)? I have my own fully featured USRobotics ADSL2+ router compact with wireless printer sharing, coverage booster and other nice functions, which I would like to continue with.I just signed up with O2 but failed to ask them about this matter, so rather I am asking the forum, maybe someone has a similar experience. I guess in case of using my own router they will not provide any technical cover or troubleshooting, but I just would like to stick to my router.
Actually does anyone know the O2 settings for the router? I have my username and password for the service but I am in need for the other technical settings for the router.

Cheers

You need to ability to manual input the MAC address as O2 will only let you connect using the MAC address they supplied on the orignal router.
Other than that, it should work OK.

Hi, I may have the answer to your question about settings for an alternative modem which I received from O2 yesterday. I am having problems with the wireless connection through the o2wireless box. It does not have much strength and I get very poor reception through it.

The info I know so far is as follows:

ISP name: O2 broadband
multiplexing method: LLC-Based
VPI: 0
VCI: 101
username: leave blank
password: leave blank
domain name: leave blank
IP address type: dynamic IP (or static IP --if you have one)
DNS server: dynamic
NAT: enable
Primary DNS server: 87.194.0.51
Secondary DNS server: 87.194.0.52

I hope the above helps.

I would like to know if anyone is having problems with the wireless signal strength - please let me know.

regards

I find the RF output of the o2 wireless box is quite low compared to other routers
I use such as a DLINK and a Netgear. The most annoying thing is that you can't
plug a big aerial in to the back of the Thomson (black box) type router as the fitted one
doesn't come off. Surely there is a hack to increase the power output.

Just had o2 broadband supplied. Their router is giving VERY poor signal. Simply cannot use it on wireless. Trying to figure out how to add my previous router on. Though its a lynksys and no modem connection.
Speed was supposed to be 'at least' 18MG I'm getting about 10 MG.

Still its cheap...

Hi

I've just had O2 Broadband connected.

Average speed with laptop connected to the O2 (Thompson) router with ethernet cable is 13MB.

However when I try it wireless it’s only 4MB.

O2 support trying to tell me it’s my environment, I even went to the trouble of switching off every other electrical item in the house and you've guessed it no difference.

Conclusion : O2 Wireless Router is pants!!!

Check your router settings as there may be a bad config or you are using a channel with inteferance. http://speedtouch.lan will get you the config screen then swap the channel manually and try again. Also you will see the router settings on wireless download/upload.

There is an article on using your own router with O2 Broadband here:

Basically - Yes, the signal fluctuates all day, doesn't matter what time of day, if there is myself on my Mac and my gf on her laptop using the internet.

I previously used Virgin as my isp and they didn't provide a wireless moden compatable with Macs so I bought a Belkin (don't ask my which model while I'm at work). The belkin worked fine in exactly the same place as the crappy O2 one is now, the sooner I switch back to it the better. Hopefully, the above will make it easier, yet somehow I doubt it will be straight forward.
