with all the talk in the media of customers not getting anywhere near the advertised "up to 8Mb" broadband , i thought id start a poll to see how bad it really is -

what speed do you ACTUALLY get ?

Hi everyone,
I have just setup a new broadband connection with BT.
I have been with Virgin (was Telewest) since they laid the cables in our street, about 7 years ago.
Been reasonably happy with Virgin, but its time to save some money, as we are only on a pension income now.
After doing my homework, i have a dual system running at the moment!
BT speeds are only 1.88Mbps download (wireless and or ethernet) max.
Virgin -----:----- 3.65Mbps ---:--- (Cable/ethernet) max.

BT upload 0.36Mbps
Virgin upload 0.35Mbps

Very dissapointed with this speed with BT as it was suggested that as i live within 1 mile of the exchange i could expect a faster result than Virgin.
But then All the ISP's are telling lies about what to expect from them.

im with bt have been for years decided to have the lot which helps up 8mg ops 3 but sits around 6 to 6.5 but i do live 200 yards from exchange the thing i found was having the Q.O.S put on your line sad thing is u need bt vision to get but your never drop under 2mg in fact ive never dropped past 5.5

I'm with BE and my papers say I'm paying for 8 Mb connection. The test gives me just over 2 Mb at pretty well any time of the day.
How's that stand in the legal sense of contract law?

Does it say 8Mb or up to 8Mb? There is a big difference.

ADSL is governed very much by the distance from the exchange and the amount of noise on the line, the further and noisier the line, the slower the speed.

More Than 50% Of The Total People Who Have Taken The Poll Get 1Mb - 3Mb, Even Though Most ISP Offer 8mb, Most People Do Not Get Even Half Of What Is Offered. Most Country's Now You Can get Over 10Mb. The UK Is So Behind In Internet Speeds.

Indeed and they (BT) also harp on about the cost of upgrading the lines to allow us the privilage of what other 3rd world countries already have, which apparently is extimated at 5 billion! Few exchanges can give over 8mb unless there is sufficient demand for it. BT keeping the market in its pocket as they know we will pay for crap speeds as we have nowhere else to get it from.

I am on 2 mb connection and get that (99% of the time) but AOL will not allow me the 8mb unless I take another contract for 18 months!!!! So much for their promise to upgrade lines to 8mb at no further charge, when they lines can support it!

Watch when you take out a contract as 8mb doesnt mean 8mb unless you it specifically states 8mb. They will often ruse your with 'upto 8mb' meaning you will be damn lucky to get anywhere near it especially during peak times.

Very True, Im On A UPTO 2mb Contract, My Line Can Support 5mb, So I Could Have A 8mb Contract, I Would But Then I See The Contract, Im Like NOOO!!!
I Dont Want A Contract, If Something Goes Wrong Or Slow Speeds I Cant Change, So While I Am Happy With 2mb, Nothing Wrong Im Staying Even Though I Would Like Faster Speed, It Would Help, But I Can Cope.
