Meaning that 4 million UK households can now subscribe to the service which will give them speeds of up to sixteen times the average UK broadband speed.

The state of the art fibre optic network is now in over 100 towns and cities, and Virgin Media have confirmed that they’re still on schedule to deliver their target of 13 million UK households being connected to their network by the middle of 2012.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said: “As data consumption rises and consumers grow increasingly reliant on their broadband service, only Virgin Media’s unique network is primed to cater for the UK’s impending data explosion. With four million homes now able to ‘get in the fast lane’ with our 100 Mbps service, the UK is racing up the broadband league tables and we’re delighted to be playing the leading role in boosting the UK’s digital infrastructure.”

The company is also in the throes of trialling even faster broadband connections offering speeds of up to 200Mbps as well as trialling an innovative 1.5Gbps service in East London.

Virgin Media have said that the discount can be used in conjunction with their existing free connection and free V HD Set Top Box.

Around 30,000 homes will be able to take advantage of between 10Mb and 100Mb, which is due to launch in June 2011.

Fibre Optic broadband provides low latency connections to the world wide web which can’t be achived with traditional ADSL or non-fibre cable. Such reliability and speed will allow users to stream video and music with absolutely no buffering or delays, this kind of speed will allow next generation services such as web TV to start to penetrate the mainstream.

As well as the high speed broadband, Virgin are rolling out their latest on demand TV service in partnership with TiVo. The TiVo service will also utilise the high speed fibre optic connection. It’s understood that the Virgin TV set top box will hae a huge 1TB hard drive, giving around 500 hours worth of recording time.
Peter Taddeo, Virgin Media’s executive director of sales said: “We’re really excited to bring our latest digital services to Derry. Now families and professionals have a choice of the UK’s leading digital entertainment services with the best in TV and ultrafast broadband all supplied by our unique fibre optic network. From the new Virgin Media TV service powered by TiVo box, to 100Mb broadband and even mobile phone services, our quadplay offering will give residents the greatest choice in options to suit their needs, with significant savings for families when taking services together.”

The upgrade will more than double the connection speeds to 10mb and the upgrades will start towards the end of February with all customers upgrades expected to be completed by the end of summer ! This is great news for existing customers and it will bring the package into line with rival adsl up to 8mb offerings.
