Are you getting the broadband Speed you paid for?

In a recent report, consumer group Which? surveyed 300 users with typical “up to 8Mbps” broadband packages and found out that the difference between the 8Mbps they could be expecting and what they actually got was huge.

The average speed of the customers surveyed was just 2.7Mbps and the worst was a mere 0.9Mbps

Despite this massive difference in speeds the advertising standards agency (ASA) has deemed that the ads comply with the advertisers code as they use the “up to” clause , while Which? believes customers are being mislead .

There is many factors that effect the speed of broadband you can actually receive the major one being the distance from your BT exchange if you would like to check this out and see what maximum speed you could expect to receive try our Broadband Speed & Availablity Postcode Checker

I have homemax with Orange and was told I could receive downloads speeds of up to 8Mb/s. I would bite your hsnd off for .9Mb/s . I average .4and have lows of less than dial up. Tried their tech boys at a cost of 50p/min and I generally listen to a cd for a considerable time before I actually speak to someone on this planet but I can not decipher what he is saying. Basically I get the same story off all of them check you filters ,plug into the master socket, and try to go on the net when it is not busy. Can you believe it?. I have written a formal complaint to their head office, unable to e-mail them, and I am waiting for a reply before speaking to Ofcom. Regards W.Williams

I’m with Tiscali Max up to 8Mb, your checker estimates up to 3.9Mb.
In the middle of the day and after midnight I can get speeds approaching 3.5Mb but early evening I’m lucky to get more than 0.4Mb.
I’m sure its down to number of users on line.
